User Personas/Task Scenarios

Before going ahead with any further design work it is necessary to look at who are potential users could be in terms of their age, gender, daily life, knowledge of modern technology etc.
We need to put ourselves in the minds of the users and consider certain stereotypes so that we can imagine how they would go about using the website. This also helps to give us a greater idea of who we are designing for.

I have therefore decided to look at what type of person might use the website and how they would go about finding the information they are looking for...

User Personas

Persona 1
A 70+ Elderly lady, (possibly named Mary Constance) doing a computer course teaching her the basics of the internet. She does not user her mobile phone to browse the internet but has just developed the knowledge to be able to access mobile internet. She would be willing to visit a mobile website if necessary to gain information.

Task Scenario
This lady is doing some shopping in Eastbourne, she has some time to kill before an appointment and she wants to find out about upcoming events at the Towner. So how does she do that?

What is happening - Accessing information on events
Why - Wants to know what events are happening
Where are they - Eastbourne town centre
Who - An elderly 70+ lady
When is this happening - Any time during the day.

How would she find out the information.....

Unspecific search results are returned

Persona 2
An adult aged 30-50 who is quite 'posh' and up to date with modern technology. This person likes to be seen as modern and trendy so has to wear the latest fashion, has a modern house in the country and of course a top of the range new smart phone. This person may casually browse mobile websites but still mainly uses their laptop/pc for net surfing. They would feel confident browsing the Towner Mobile website.

Task Scenario
This person is taking their dog for a walk early morning and remembering a conversation they had with a friend about the Towner art gallery. They become curious and want to find out more about the gallery there and then.

What - Finding out about the Towner
Why - Want to know what the Towner is all about
Where - A country lane close to their home

How would they find the info...

Persona 3
An art student aged 18-23 who is always looking to develop her artistic skills. She has limited knowledge of computer based design  and is more keen on paintings/crafts etc. She regularly visits art galleries to help inspire her future work.  She uses her smart phone mainly for texting and making/receiving phone calls but also uses the facebook mobile app. She would feel fairly confident in accessing the Towner Mobile website.

Task Scenario
This student is with a friend and they get off the train at Eastbourne station and want to know if the Towner Gallery is open on Mondays

What - People accessing opening times
Why - They want to know opening times at the Towner

Persona 4
A tourist  aged 50-60 who is unfamiliar to the Eastbourne area and normally would rely on sightseeing maps to find attractions. This tourist is fairly unfamiliar with mobile technology but regularly browses the internet. They have a basic mobile phone which they use for making/receiving phone calls only. They are aware of the ability to browse the internet on a mobile phone but would need the website to be extremely forgiving and self explanatory to be able to use it.

Task Scenario
This tourist has just been on a sightseeing tour of Eastbourne on an open top bus! During the tour they mentioned the Towner Art Gallery and what a nice place it was to visit. This tourist is curious and wants to visit but also wonders if they have a cafe where he can get a drink.
